I used to press stop and rewind a million times trying to figure out the words to my favorite hip hop songs. I would write the lyrics down to the entire song, play the music back and rhyme to it until I memorized the song. That’s how I got into learning how to flow and write... But that was only the beginning of who I was destined to become. I started to construct a reputation as a mic annihilator. I was rapping and spitting poetry like my life depended on it, cutting my teeth on the empty verses of the competition. I was hungry and ready to devour all the artistic fodder placed in front of me.
The more people gravitated towards my gift of being a lyricist, artist, and poet- the more I realized that this gift was bigger than me. It was bigger than trying to write the illest verse. It was about INSPIRATION. I wanted to show but not in the sense of performing, I wanted to show the world that my impact was going to be historic. This was a different hunger that I needed to feed. I began working with youth. This was the beginning of the next chapter in my life. This was bigger than grabbing a pen, a mic, a pencil, or creating art. I grinded with these youth so that they could see what was possible for them.
Yes. I talked music with them, but what resonated with these kids was talking life with them. I had a slogan “Don’t talk about it, be about it” which meant exactly that. I wanted these kids and the people in their environment to know that their actions were going to define their life. I wanted to spread my hunger to these youth so that they could feel what I felt. I developed a music, poetry, and art program and implemented it at the residential treatment center I worked at. This was another way for me to feed the omnipresent hunger and desire to help and spread love and knowledge through art.
During this latest chapter of my life, I found a new focus and mission. I am still writing songs, composing poetry, and performing around the world trying to inspire people. However, I wanted to spread my art and reach further. Like Louis Armstrong said, “Music is my life, it is a reflection of what I go through.” I spread this out to encompass art in general. But more importantly, I wanted the young artists and youth in general to be able to say if she can do it so can I.
